Brief Description:  Final Assemby for Cabin Paint

I’m in the final push to get the cabin ready for the painter. I spent two more days assembling the cabin and drilling the remaining rivet holes on the panels that join and support the frame (Eyebrows, cheek, interior hinge covers, etc). I also installed the cabin heat duct vents so they could be riveted prior to painting.

It’s been a long process of figuring out what I’m going to do for the final paint scheme, and it turns out that this has been the most difficult part of the process to date. With the help of Brian (a good friend and co-worker), Tom (my buddy from PA), Ryan (an design student out of UC Berkeley), Dawn (my wife), dozens of Safari schemes found online, and finally my own ideas and desires, I think I’ve landed on something. Too hard to explain here, but it will basically be a red and black design with an interesting graphic on the side of the ship and the instrument console.

The cabin goes to the paint shop on Friday and due to the holidays it will take 2 to 3 weeks to get it back into my shop. I will be working closely with the painter to make sure that the design is going per plan.

In the meantime, Tom is flying out here this week to help me complete the balance of the riveting. I have assembled the cabin and riveted as necessary to prepare everything for Tom’s arrival. My riveting technique is improving, although it remains a stressful job. It is cool to see it coming together, even when it’s only painted white so far. I’m so grateful for Tom’s help to get this out the door.

Once it’s completed, the painter and I have arranged for a flatbed truck to pick up the cabin, and drop it off with the painter on Friday. In preparation for this, I am also identifying the final color of each panel and portion of the cabin. It is a lot to keep track of, to say the least, so I’m putting masking tape labels on every surface, as you can see in the photos below.

I have also ordered the seat color and interior carpet from Safari. I hope to have everything from them in February.
