Brief Description:  Pod Attachment

The hours recorded on this task are misleading because there was a lot of little overflow and clean up items that needed to be completed for this step. I had to reassemble the console in order to double check the mounting locations for the pod as it rests on both the console and against the vertical frame supports. I secured the floor panel to the frame of the helicopter to make sure it wasn’t going to shift out of position. Then all of the holes needed to be marked from above and below, and cross checked against the mounting plates. The mounting plates needed to be sanded, cleaned and primed before installation.

The proper bolt lengths needed to be determined, then everything needed to be installed with the correct washers and lock nuts. Once the base was secure to the floor, and the floor was secured to the frame, I secured the pod to the console. Next, I compared the level of the frame with that of the floor and seats to get an idea of how the helicopter was sitting. Then I clamped a level to the top of the pod and adjusted the location of the pod in regards to the internal frame risers. Once the pod was where I wanted it, I clamped the pod to the vertical frame and drilled #30 holes, two in each side. Even with just the clecos in place, the pod is amazingly strong. You can actually move the entire helicopter just by trying to move the pod.

I will eventually upsize the holes again to accommodate the final bolts, but the clecos make it very easy to take the pod on and off. I’m really happy as to how this came out.

The next step in this task will be to install nut plates on the rear of the console so I can screw through the aft kick panel so I can add a little more strength. Additionally, I will need to drill an access hole in the base of the console in order to provide a route to the belly of the helicopter for the pitot tube, temperature probe, landing light, etc.
