Brief Description: Securing Console to Floor Panel
|
|
This project task is about permanently mounting the base of the console to the floor panel. I am looking for stability with the center console and the pod since this is going to be the nerve center for the helicopter and its going to be subject to a number of stresses. The manual suggests short spaced tabs for the base of the console, but as you have seen, I used a 1/8” x 2” angle material the entire length of the base. It will proved for a very secure mounting platform.
Additionally, I have also designed the console so it could be fully accessible from almost every side. We all know how wiring goes, and I know that I will be pretty much be living in the console for many months to come, and I didn’t want to be struggling for access. The only other permanent part of the structure is the forward face panel, which you can see in the photos below in green primer.
I carefully measured where the holes for the rivets needed to be placed keeping in mind the frame and tabs below, and the clearances I needed against the sides for the rivet gun. Once the holes were spaced and drilled, I deburred and primed for assembly.
Riveting sucks. Actually, to be much more accurate, I suck at riveting. I don’t know if its just all me, partly the gun, or a combination of both, but I can’t seem to find a consistency with my technique. I’m playing with the pressure on the gun, how I hold it, how I work the bucking bar, speed, etc. What I AM getting good at is drilling out and removing bad rivets. SO frustrating. At the end of the day, they are fine, but I need to get my act together before I attack the cabin riveting, and that is coming up soon.
