Brief Description:  Nut Plate State of Mind

I actually thought the nut plates would take longer than they did, but I was able to complete installing 65 nut plates all in one day. Some were more difficult to install than others due to the location or access, but the most difficult were in the angled corner brackets because there wasn't a lot of room for the plate without hitting the frame itself.

It was also important to take my time to make sure that I was installing the nut plate on the correct side of the tab. It would be easy to start counter sinking the incorrect side of the frame and really cause myself some grief. Luckily, I didn't make any mistakes and I'm really happy how they all worked out.

It was helpful to use two air drills so I didn't have to change out the bits as often. I started by drilling out the holes for the rivets, then counter sinking for the flush mount rivets, then drilling the hole for the screw. For the most part I used my rivet squeezer to set the rivets, but in many areas I needed to use a rivet gun. Out of 130 set rivets, I had to redo only two, which for me is pretty good.

I'm excited to begin reassembling, but I know it's going to be a slow process because I will need to refinish all of the pieces as they go on. They need to be fitted to the new nut plates, as well as refined for a better alignment with the other panels. I want them to fit well and look good.
