Brief Description:  Headboard Modifications

Now that I have the lower seat back panel in place, I can revisit the first panel I even made and customize the final fit. I wasn't too surprised that the panel needed a good deal of work, because even the side panels affect the fit.

I used the process of very small trim cuts in order to ssneak up on the actual size required. As one area was trimmed back, another would now touch the bubble, so there was a lot of on and off. I lost count as to how many times I romoved and reinstalled the panel, but now it is completely resting on the frame and not touching the bubble.

With the help on my buddy Tom from PA, I ordered some nice trim edging that should finish off the area between the headboard and the bubble and ensure that nothing will scratch. I'm sure I will have to cut it back once again in order to accomodate the rubber, but at least it will be a constant cut across the entire top edge. I don't want to make any assumptions until I have the material in hand.

Cutting out the seatbelt slots was very stressful, since there was more guessing than science. I also don't know what my finish piece is going to be at these holes, so I don't want to go too big. Also, I want to make sure they are low enough so the retracting belts are sliding on the frame rather than the headboard.

As for the trim piece for the seatbelts, this has been a challange. I ordered and just received a seatbelt trim piece fron a 1965 Porsche 911. Unfortunately, they are just a bit too big and will need to go back.

For the bottom, I bought rubber grommets from a 1975 Chevy truck rear tailgate hinge. They look like they might work well since the lower belts are static and will not be sliding on the grommet. We will see. I want to figure out the top pieces first.
