Borrowed a friends 36 mm socket which to my disbelief did not fit either. Went to Alaska Industrial Hardware (took the gland nut with me) and found that none of the (3) 36mm sockets they had would fit it as well. Trialed a 1 7/16 and found that it fit very well- roughly a 36.5mm socket.
With that I was able to torque the gland nut (at least to an intermediate value) and figure out my endplay. Matched up my shims and test fit to spec.
Placed the cam plug and used Permatex 3H to seal the faces of the case half's. Had some difficulty assuring free and easy movement with the crank as my main bearing appeared to have jumped. Then it was something else. Then something else. Then another something which I couldn't quite figure out but I guess I fixed because when I next fitted the half's it all went dandy.
