Brief Description:  Another ouch! - kink in wing skin

There's a curtain stomach wrenching feeling you get when you realize you just did something bad. I was attaching the nutplates to the rib at the large inspection cover. I had to lift the bottom of the skin away from the ribs to get the squeezer in. I didn't think I pulled it back that far but when I lowered the panel back down I saw a small kink in the skin in an area in the middle. It looked like a little arch about 2 inches wide. All I could do was try to figure out what I did wrong and what I could do to fix it.

I decided I better get some advice on this one so I solicited the group. Kent White offered this remedy: "You need a fine little shot bag with #16 shot in it. (Yeah they call it dust). You also need a dead blow urethane-faced hammer to pat the metal with. I mean "pat" and not "beat", thump, whack, flog, thrash, flail, or etc. 2024 stretches faster than it shrinks, and faster than it straightens out. So you have to be sensitive to its operating envelope. I back it up with the shot bag, and work the high spots down, gently but firmly patting them with the dead blow. Then I reverse the tools and work on the back side, if possible, again working down those "previously low spots" but that are now high spots because I am now on the other side of the panel. Be patient. Be methodical. Go slowly and observe carefully. You have to sort out what comes first, second, third, etc. It can be a puzzle, sometimes."

I got the supplies I needed and worked a little on the kink as Kent described. We had plans to go skiing after school and I figured it might be good to get out of the shop for the rest of the day.

I continued to think about it and I came to the conclusion of how it happened. I lifted the sheet with one hand while working on rib. That must have concentrated too much to the area above. This could have been prevented if I had clamped something like a 1x2 along the bottom so it all lifted evenly together. Or better yet, take the panel off completely to do the work under it.
