Brief Description:  EAA Sheet Metal Class

This weekend I went to Prescott for the EAA "Sheet Metal Basics" Class. http://www.sportair.org/ It does not count as construction on my RV, but it was good practice.

Things I liked about the course:
1) Again a good overview about tools, hardware, and construction techniques.
2) This project is better than the EAA "Van's" construction class because you have to drill and mark all of your own holes, cut your own metal parts, mount a hinge, make/mount an inspection plate, and various other tasks.
3) The instructor for this class was an old A&P instructor from Dallas (I will try to remember his name later) and I liked his technical instruction style better than what I received at the Van's class.
4) I enjoyed playing with the pneumatic pop-rivet gun. It was awesome.

Things I wish they would improve on:
1) Get into the 90s and have someone build you a nice set of plans in CAD for your instruction book. It is easy and I am sure that EAA can find someone to do it for free in about 10 minutes. The instructor kept saying "you must follow the instructions" when the instructions sucked and the drawings were worse. I guess this might be an instruction technique to make us think about the construction process. However, when the instructor reads our plans, can decipher them, and then has to pick up the example piece to figure out how the parts go together; something is wrong with the plans...
2) Figure out a way to have a smaller part that one man can work on. I know a lot of guys did not finish because their partner was slow.
3) The instructor needs to be more critical on riveting. In addition make it a point to watch and provide feedback on each individual in the class at some point during the day. The week Zebra's in the room were taking up the instructor’s full attention, but I wish that I could have had a little more constructive criticism through the day.
