Brief Description:  Landing Light Mount

Today I fabricated a mount for the landing light.

I have the Microsun LED landing light. When I purchased this light I didn't know there were internal and external versions available, and I got the internal model which has long cooling fins on the back side requiring a hole at the mounting location to clear these fins.

Another consideration is the mounting location. The factory S-20 has the landing light located in the front left inlet of the cowl, and others have followed suit, so I decided I would also. This presents a small challenge because the mounting surface is not a simple flat plane.

I created a two piece mount. To make the front piece I traced the cowl mounting surface and then marked the hole I needed to clear the fins on a piece of .040" aluminum I had in the scrap pile. I cut this out using a band saw and jig saw. The ends of this piece were then bend back 90 degrees in a vice.

The second piece was a simple length of 0.040" thick aluminum cut to 3/4" wide. I hand bent the center to match the curve at the bottom of previously cut front piece, and then bent the ends up 90 degrees. A few rivets holds it all together, and some 3/16" screws will hold it to the cowl.

To help hold the curved section of the two components together I used a small piece of angle at the center of the curve. A countersunk rivet through the bottom leaves a smooth surface to match the cowl.
