Brief Description:  Covering of the Rudder.

I have spent several evening covering the rudder. It is not too exciting work on a day to day basis, so I have not done updates for each step, but Iam ready to move on to the ailerons, so thought it would be a logical time to make a post.

The covering process gets easier and easier, and I am actually starting to enjoy it...

Some comments on the Rudder:

* As I expected, I ran out of lacing cord. I ordered 5 feet from Rans, but they said it was only 75 cents and they had a 10.00 minimum. I added a couple of closeout rings I anticipate needing, but after several weeks they had not arrived - Turns out the close out rings are on backorder. Oh well - On to the ailerons...

* I left a large flap of material at the bottom corner where the lexan gusset goes, and trimmed it after I final tightened the fabric, but before the patches. I trimmed it to just below where the lexan goes, but in hindsight I would have trimmed it so I had some to glue to the steel gusset at the bottom of the rudder. The first image shows the trim of the fabric and how it curled under, away from teh lexan. The second image shows the trim of the 4.5" round patch, and the third picture shows how I added a triangular patch to make sure this area is never a problem.

* I used bias cut tape for the curve at the top of the rudder and the front of the elevators. Just a little work with the iron makes taping the corners easy.

* I have noticed that thinner coats of glue under the fabric result in fewer bubbles full of glue under the fabric that are difficult to iron out. I had been gooping on glue mixed at 1 glue to 2 MEK, but I started adding just a little MEK and have been please with the results. I have also found that I need to keep adding MEK as I work to keep the glue from getting thicker, even though I keep it covered except when actually gluing.
