Brief Description:  Prep Left & Right Inboard Wing Fairings

The weather was absolutely nasty on Saturday. We started off with very little snow.....then freezing rain....then a cold rain the rest of the day. Rob texted me Friday and said he would come over if I was planning to work on the airplane.....well that of course was a YES as the project is mostly what I do with any spare time I have....got to get it completed!

So Rob came over mid morning. I had gotten down to the shop and had two of the four panels filed and deburred. The remainder of processing the panels could wait until later. Todays work would take place in the basement.

We got the canopy off the large workbench and place the left wing on the bench. We then laid out the panels and began to locate the placement of the panels. We marked the placement and then proceeded to start drilling them in place. We used a 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe to bend the area where the forward panel went around the leading edge and tried it till we were satisfied with the fit. We continued with drilling, dimpling, and installing nutplates.

The RV8 has a belly fairing that the wings match up to that must be matchdrilled after the wings are attached. Robs little trick is to draw a line from the holes and mark another line a set distance away so when you have the wing on you just measure and drill and the holes match up. You can see it in pic 2 & 3. Nice trick.

We completed the left wing and then set up and completed the right wing. Second one always goes faster....but the process to complete the task still takes quite a while. A great work day in the shop and another Big Thanks to Rob for the help!
