Brief Description:  Empennage Fairing and Oil Door

I removed the empennage fairing and sanded the small areas of micro. I then checked the fit again and I am satisfied. There are just a couple small places that Superfil will work well.

I then took 150 grit sandpaper and sanded the entire outer surface of the fairing in preparation to Smooth Prime the fairing. The thickness of the fairing wasn't consistent due to using fiberglass to build up some of the mating surfaces so after sanding the micro I used sandpaper to radius the edges of the fairing and leave a consistant edge that blended in with the radius. That made it look a lot better visually. I applied just a bit of SuperFil to a couple small areas and set it on the airplane to cure.

I worked on the oil door. I match drilled the holes and countersunk them for AN4 rivets. I felt that before riveting the hinge to the door I should get the bottom side cleaned up. There were very shallow lines where the packing tape was used as a release agent when molding the doors to the cowl prior to cutting the hole for the oil door in the cowl. This was a suggestion from Rick which I think worked excellent for the oil door fab. I sanded the bottom side smooth and had some imperfections that needed filler so I just skim coated it with SuperFil and got the cavities filled. There are places where SuperFil really works excellent. I set the door aside to cure.
