Brief Description:  Landing Gear Fairings and upper Cowling

I began the fairings using just a very light coat of Smooth Prime out of the can that really needed to be stirred better......basically I spilled some primer and decided to use that on the gear fairings....so that's what they got. I sanded the fairings first thing during this session and was able to apply some glaze right away.

I then went to the cowl and sanded the Smooth Prime off that I applied last night. Once again I applied it thinly and allowed it to dry overnight. There was a big difference in the cowl area I applied the Smooth Prime as it filled a lot of the surface pinholes and imperfections that are so notorious on the "pinky" fiberglass parts Vans provided when I got my cowl. The newer cowls come with gelcoat. There are still plenty of pinholes and imperfections to deal with in the test area.

The bottom line is there is a lot more to do to get this.....I am somewhat experimenting with the Smooth Prime. I covered the "test area"again, with a thicker coat using the squeegee. The primer sands fairly well but is tougher than regular primer.

I went back to the landing gear fairings and sanded the glaze. I decided to hit them with a coat of primer........the first indications are that it has plenty of pinholes mostly in the rivet line areas. I will sand them and assess what needs to be filled....one thing for sure....there is plenty of work to be done!

It's amazing to me that no one has really come up with a product or process to deal with finishing fiberglass with less difficulty......
