Brief Description: Install nutplates for wing root fairings-3
|
|
There are two holes for attachment of the fwd root fairings next to the spar—one top and one bottom—these can’t be dimpled using the squeezer and I believe the .032 skin is a bit too thin to machine c/s, so I made a dimple die from a piece of 3/16” aluminum scrap. I drilled a #19 hole in the scrap, followed by machine countersinking for a #8 screw. Starting on the right wing, I used a nutplate as a guide and drilled the skin for a single lug nutplate. The plans call for a K-1100 nutplate, but there is not enough room. I am using a MS-21053-L08 for these attachments—I’m short a couple, so another order off to ACS. Anyhow, I used an AN509-8R8 screw thru the wing skin and into the dimple die. I put a drop of oil under the screw head, added a nut and cranked it down. It makes an acceptable dimple—not as purdy as the squeezer, but it will suffice. I did a repeat of this process for the left wing. Now, I need to make another dimple die for the opposite hole on each wing. I drilled the left wing for nutplate attachments for the forward fairing using a nutplate jig, then dimpled the#19 holes as well as the holes in the fairing. Tomorrow, I hope to get most of the remaining nutplates attached.
