Brief Description:  Hang that engine!

Today is engine hanging day. Some builders recommend a helper or two and I have read logs where it was done solo. Well, since this was my first engine hanging, I didn’t know exactly how to do it, so I don’t think I could instruct a helper either. I read as many logs as I could about other procedures—also found a good write up on VAF. Van’s manual says to install bottom bolts first, then the top. The instruction on VAF says to do the top first. I flipped a coin and it came up “top bolts first”, so that is where I started. I hoisted the engine until even with the mount, installed the rubber biscuits and began with the top right bolt (as viewed from cockpit). This bolt took about 15 minutes—pretty easy. The top left bolt was a little harder, but no big deal. The bottom right was a real beast! I worked for about an hour and gave up for lunch. Afterwards, I attacked it again. Tried numerous variations of raising the hoist, loosening top right, loosening top left, lowering hoist and on and on. Tried so many combinations, that I could not tell which one worked. The bottom left was only slightly difficult. I tightened all bolts and removed the hoist. I still need to space the castle nuts and install cotter pins—need a nap first!
