After a lot of sanding I sprayed grey primer on the whole thing. This lifts the grain a little which I sand down using steel wool or scotch bright pads. The black paint will go on smooth after final sanding and the paint won't raise the grain because the primer already did.
I also stained the top piece of African Mahogony. It has a really rich look.
