Brief Description: HS Rear Spar & Clearance Notch for El. Horn
I started riveting the Horizontal Stabilizer today. First the rear spar. And before I do I saw another note on the drawing that wasn't covered on the plan. It says to cut away flange material on the center of the lower flange on the aft spar to clear the elevator control horn. Well there aren't any dimensions. So again I got on Van's Air force and found a builder named rvg8tor who had experienced this. I removed material 3/8 deep and 2 3/32 wide. Well see if I need any filing at final assembly time. I suppose this could be done later when doing final assembly but it is easier now. All rivets went fine until I showed my wife how it was done and I bent it. So I drilled it out. I ended up replacing two rivets. One technique for getting a center drill started is to turn it by hand very slowly while holding it in place until a little mark is made. This works better than using a punch.
