Brief Description:  Compressor Setup

I set up my compressor this week and the lessons learned are: Home Depot's 60 gallon compressor for $399 appears to be a great value. I also bought their Filter, Regulator, and 25' Reel of Hose. I purchased a bunch of fittings and assembled them. I learned that threads come in at least three thread types: 1) Pipe Thread, Compression Threads for compression fittings, and Tapered Threads. *Don't get mixed up over thread types. Stick with PT (Pipe Threads). The threads on these three are different and don't inter-change very well.

And couplers also come in 3 or more types: 1) Automotive, 2) Industrial, 3) Flat, 4) Aero. These types are referring to the shape of the nipple and female receiver. Look close, they are different. Stick with just one type and I recommend INDUSTRIAL type because that is what stores have the most of, and by default most people fall into Industrial. Then you'll notice that 3/8 ID hose with 1/4 fittings usually doesn't come in more than 50' lengths. This is because over 50' might have to much pressure loss using 1/4 fittings. You'll notice that 100' lengths are usually 3/8 or 1/2 hose with fittings the same size to reduce pressure loss. Keep the biggest diameter hose you can until you are ready to reduce to 1/4 fittings for final hose and tools.

The oiler drops drips of oil into the airstream. I adjusted it so it drips about once per 20 minutes of constant use. Notice oiler is after the T. I have a separate no oil line for painting purposes.

I put my compressor in a closet off the side of my garage so I can shut the door and keep it quiet. So I made my compressor with an initial hose run using 3/8 hose with 3/8 fittings. This brings the air from the closet to the shop (garage). Then in the shop I installed the filter and regulator both with 3/8 holes. Then I put a T fitting and started two runs with standard compressor hose which is 3/8 ID and 1/4 fittings NPT (Pipe Thread) remember? All the air tools need 1/4 fittings for the nipples and couplers.
