The port indicator on the CDI appeared to fail. I did not know if this was a faulty indicator, or an indicator of a more significant problem.
Replacing the indicator fixed the problem, but in the process, I shorted the left cdi power to ground, burning out the supply wire. IK replaced it, and all worked OK.
