Brief Description: Designed and fabbed cowling attachments
I spent a considerable amount of time deciding how I would attach the engine cowling to the fuselage. I finally decided to attach the cowling with DZUS fasteners. Measuring the thickness of the cowl, I determined the mating surface needed to be about .040 below the surface of the fuselage. I added an .040 shim to accomplish this.
1. Cut back fuselage front to match concept. 2. Cut shims to offset mounting surface by .040. 3. Cut mounting surface segments. 4. Drilled/clecoed shims and mounting surface. 5. Cleaned, primed, and riveted in place.
