Brief Description:  Finished (L) gear weld mount

Well I received a quick reply from Van’s with the usual push on, stop being a dork comment! Of course they did not say that, they did have word of encouragement and some methods I could use. Scott explained that it is not uncommon to have to use some force to get the weld mount aligned. He pointed out that this part is after all built to with stand landings so there was not much I could do to match that kind of force. So I pulled out my rubber mallet and while pushing on the weld mount I wacked it with the mallet, it slipped in place enough to get one of the wing bolts in place (I am using hardware store bolts with threads cut off). With that in place things stay and I use a long punch in an adjacent hole to start a few of the bolts that go into the 804 center section. The alignment issue I had with the outer bolts is taken care of with weld mount hammered in place. The downward pressure on the lower longeron realigns the holes on the side.

It took three iterations to get the weld mount holes trimmed so there was no interference. I then shot the back side of the mount and the part that extends out the bottom with primer, the powder coating was chipping off in several places. I am hoping like heck the right side will not have to be removed but time will tell. Those guys at Van’s can be so helpful.
