Brief Description:  Drilled Pitot mount and cut bottom skin to fit

Well I finally committed to the pitot tube location. I stayed with the recommendation to go one bay outboard from the outer inspection hole. I am using the Gretz mast and it comes with some OK instructions. I did DV8 from them a bit. I first clamped it into position and made sure the mounting plate was square with the main spar. After I was happy with the alignment I drilled the four holes that will attach to the main spar. I initially drilled the holes undersized #42, then once clecoed to the skin I open them up to #40. I have to add a .22 sheet of aluminum as a spacer the joggle in the mount is made for a thinner spar than that on the RV-8, so to get the skin fit flush I needed a spacer. After marking he holes in the plate and drilling the holes it was time to make the cutout in the spacer for the pitot mast. This was good practice for when I will have to make the same cut in the wing skin. I first drilled out a hole with a large enough to get my pneumatic nibbler inserted. I picked up the nibbler on sale at Harbor Freight a while back. Now the nibbler is only used for rough in work, it really cuts quickly. Once roughed in I used a router bit in my Dremel tool and carefully cut the hole closer to the line, once real close I switched to a course sand paper wheel then finally a scotch bite type fitting. The instructions tell you to attach the skin and plate and back drill through the plate into the skin, well to do this I would have to drill through the access plate at an odd angle. I choose to attach the bracket to the skin on the table top and drill there. My thought was I was drilling undersized holes, once done I would then cleco the skin on and then drill to full size from the outside, so this is what I did, you can see how it turned out in the photo. My only complaint was when I cutting the hole for the mast through the skin, I used the plate cut out as a guide; well the mast itself has a slightly different shape. All in all a great day, I am over the pitot hurtle:)
