Brief Description:  Laid up upper faring

Well today was the bid day and a long one. I worked 7 hours with no meal breaks (which I don’t need) and only a couple of bathroom breaks. I laid up the fairing over the roll bar today. I am not sure my technique is ideal but I just mix up small batches of resin (one pump of West System) and lay up some cloth then do the next and the next.

I had some 2” and 4” tapes that are 9 oz I think. I first laid on the 2 “ using the nice side of the tape and cutting off the fat side, I laid one factory edge on the forward side of the windscreen and then did the same on the aft side with the second layer. My next two layers were with the 4”tape cut down to the size needed. I have a little variation in the width from the lower edge to the upper part of the layup. I only did 3 layers on the lower sides that overlap the skirt and this seemed be fairly thick. I may add one more layer later but not today. My last layer I used BID cloth cut to size. It does not have the nice edge but I lays on the curve much better, kind of wish I had sued this from the beginning.

My layup sits a little proud of the 5 layers of electrical tape I made so hopefully I get the nice lip I am planning. I will leave this for a good 36 hours to make sure I have a good cure then it will be fill and sand to blend in the low and high spots so it looks nice.

It feels good to have this almost done. It may not look pretty but I could fly it the way it is, this is all about flying this summer. I can work on the looks later.
