Brief Description:  Glued windscreen

It was a big day today; I did the initial gluing of the windscreen. It was a long day of taping and prepping then a couple hours of gluing. I have learned that it is just plain tough to get a good fillet with this stuff and even more difficult with the inside corners of the windscreen. I already found a solution, I plan to trim all the inside edges with small diameter fuel line. This will protect the Sika from UV and make it look nice.

I figured out where the glue line will go then taped things up. I then installed the windscreen and holding the lower part up a bit a applied a bead of glue along the bottom from the outside then smoothed the fillet. For the roll bar, I taped a bit of ¼” hose along the inside edge (forward side of the roll bar) to act as a dam, then ran a bead of glue between each spacer. The plan will be to remove these spacers once this layer is set then fill the spacer areas and then run a nice cosmetic bead of glue.

Removing the tape from the inside turned out to be a real pain I taped right up to the glued line and getting to the tape on the inside corners was a real tough job. I left one layer of tape on the aft side of the roll bar to make a nice edge for the cosmetic layer of glue. This will also get pained or I might make a fillet here to keep things from flexing too much when getting in and out, I still have to decide on that. I will also add a reinforcing fillet along the outside edge; this will make for good backing for the filler and glass that will attach along there.

All in all it turned out nice. The one area that is messy is the forward side of the roll bar; this area is tight and really can’t access to make a good fillet. I used some ¼” plastic tubing but still not as nice as I would like. My saving grace is this area will get covered by the fiberglass fairing I will lay up over the windscreen. Plus the black fuel line to trim it out.
