Brief Description: Flew to Piqua, OH to have Prop serviced
With forty hours on the airframe I knew that the steady film of grease that kept appearing on the windscreen was a sign of a problem. After a closer inspection I noticed grease collecting on the inside of the spinner. I called the factory and and spoke to Sam, a technical support specialist. He indicated that while it wasn't a safety of flight issue, I should get it serviced right away. I've been planning on getting the prop balanced and I really wanted to take N104BS on a cross country. I asked if they could schedule me a slot at the factory service center in Piqua and give me factory tour. They were happy to accommodate my request.
Sunday evening I departed Smyrna (MQY) and upon arrival in Frankfort, Kentucky (FFT) about an hour later was met by my father and brother. The folks at the Capital City airport are great and found space in a community hanger to park the airplane as the weather was predicting possible thunderstorms that evening. We headed out to dinner and after a few hours of catching up I arrived at dad's house and stayed overnight. I left early Monday morning and made the 1 hour flight on to Piqua where the service center technicians were awaiting my arrival. They directed me to the front of the hanger where I shut down the engine. Within minutes they were removing the spinner and prepared to remove the prop. These guys are all business and waste no time in getting things done. The service center technician indicated that he was certain that the problem was due to improperly torqued bolts on the rear of the hub that hold the backing plate in place and they see this occurrence regularly with RV's. Nevertheless they continued with removal of the prop and handed it off to the repair center for disassembly and inspection.
