Brief Description:  HS-411 bearing assembly done!

Made it back home from last trip late last night, about 0030. Heckuva commute with 5 pilots all trying to get to OMA on the eve of College World Series. Amazingly, we all made it home on 3 different flights. I was especially relieved to make it back because Mike Howard of our local EAA chapter 80 had generously offered to let me ride in his RV-12 to the annual RV fly-in in Boone, Iowa (KBNW). Boone is also the location of W&C Aircraft Works, which is where I took my RV construction class with Keith Campbell (found on Van's website under Support).

Keith has built around seven RV's, as well as won awards at Oshkosh (in the days before pre-punched kits). It was great to see him again and catch up. Boone is also the home of the aforementioned Cleaveland Tool, a short drive up the road from the airport. Nice to see Mike, famous for the Cleaveland Tool how-to videos (a great resource). Sorry Annette was not there. She always answers the phone, and her knowledge of the inventory is encyclopedic (ask her about her chickens and goats).

Mike's RV12 is the fifth aircraft he has built, all for personal use, and it shows. The RV-12 is an LSA, with a Rotax 100hp motor. We did 120 knots on 4.5 gph (maybe I should have gotten an RV-12). Mike is also a technical counselor (maybe not the correct title) for chapter 80, and kindly said I could call him anytime. It's corny, but true: the people you meet and the relationships fostered are the real reason you build an airplane. I came home motivated to get the HS-411 knocked out.

After the first HS-411, I ordered new parts. They were waiting for me when I got home. It occurred to me while I was gone to use tape to hold the bearing in place. I clecoed the bearing and the pre-punched flange together, then taped the bearing to the flange. Best idea I've had so far, giving perfect alignment. I used AN470D4-6 rivets this time, and they turned out perfectly, fitting the gauge to a tee. Fair warning, I've seen both -5 and -6 rivets used, each with good results. Your mileage may vary.
