Brief Description:

Today I was determined to do the HS-411 elevator bearing assembly. I was concerned with this because it seemed fraught with potential errors and misalignment to creep in (see pics). There are two powder coated steel flanges. One is is pre-punched, the other must be match drilled. The VA-146 bearing is sandwiched between them. It also is pre-punched. The problem is clamping the three pieces together with the holes is alignment. I used cleco clamps to hold them together. Cleco clamps are very strong, but they are smooth faced and slide easily (maybe something rubber in between to keep from sliding). The clamped assembly in then clecoed to the spar, then the aft four holes are match drilled. Remove the assembly, and match drill the forward tow holes.

Then it is riveted with AN470D4-5 rivets. This is very clear in the plans, and the instructions. You can see the results I got. The shop head is well below the gauge. Online I found evidence that builders had seen this problem on other builders logs, but never found anything directly.
