Brief Description:

Today I finished fabricating the relief holes on both HS-702 forward spars. The spars are made for the RV-8, and you must trim off about an inch of the flange, bend it as flat as you can, then create a relief hole for where you bend the spar web up 6 degrees. The plans have you drill a #30 hole, enlarge it to 1/4" with a unibit, then trim the rest out. Great plan, poor execution on my part. Out of four holes, I drilled none out centered, so I ended up using my Dremel cutting wheel to to cut close to the blue line of my layout, then filed away until it matched the plans (pic 1). The time it takes to file is offset by the fact that it is difficult to make a serious error doing so. A power tool can turn a piece into scrap in an istant. It may not look like it, but that little relief notch represents a lot of labor ( x 4).

The blue line on the flange is where the plans have you trim to, but I'll be drilling a rivet hole using the skin as a guide, and you have to maintain a minimum edge distance from a rivet hole of 2 x diameter of rivet. I left some metal on to make sure I can trim off more while maintaining the minimums. I hope it is not a problem when I cleco it together for the match drilling.

Also finished trimming both HS-00006 ribs (pic 2). Not as much work as the spar, but must do mirror image for left and right side. Plans have you draw a rivet line on HS-00001, each with different dimensions. I just lined them both up on straight edge and connected the dots. Looks like a robot.
