Date:  8-17-2007
Number of Hours:  4.00
Manual Reference:  6-2
Brief Description:  6-2 Drilling VS-1003 and VS-1014's

I feel like I covered quite a bit of ground today!

Special thanks go out to Aaron Simms in Georgia. Aaron is co-worker of mine and he spent nearly an hour answering some of my questions today. That hour was well spent and paid off this evening.

Today, I attached the Spar Caps (VS-1014L & R) to the Rear Spar (VS-1003).

I wasn't real happy with the straightness of my cuts on VS-1014's, so Aaron suggested that I straighten them on the belt sander (background image 3). That paid off and we ended up with very nice looking spar caps.

I deburred the rear spar doubler (VS-1008), but it doesn't look that great. Getting the outside edges is easy, but getting inside the holes is hard work. I'm meeting the Houston Area RV builders tomorrow and I'm going to bring it along, maybe they'll have some ideas. In the meantime, I went ahead and cleco'd it to the rear spar.

I also added the rudder hinge brackets on the back of the rear spar. I also added the hinge doubler (VS-1017) to the back of the top rudder hinge bracket. NOTE: In earlier kits, VS-1017 was not required, but some cracks were discovered in the rear spar of Van's factory plane and Van's issued service bulletin SB-06-2-3. The bulletin calls for adding the hinge doubler to add additional support. All the new kits ship with VS-1017.

Right now it's all cleco'd together, you can see the photos.
