I torqued the 'extra' case today and had Jim mic the bores to be sure they were round and true. Jim said you need to be aware when buying a case on its own because sometimes corvairs have had issues with big pieces coming off either side of the engine and damaging the crank journals. This one appears to be just fine.
I've taken apart many type 1 VW motors but this is my first corvair. They are similar in many ways but definitely reference the green manual. I took me about an hour or so to get the short block apart. I haven't done this kind of work in a very long time and it brings back all kinds of vw memories. I'm still deciding on which case to use. I'm going to clean this one up, compare and then make a decision.
