Brief Description:  corvair core

Obtained a core engine from my neighbor Jim. (BTW, this might be a frightful picture for my Mom who might think this motor might actually go into an airplane I might fly....I'm sure it brings back VW memories) The short block is a RW motor which is a smog motor but it didn't come with the original heads. Jim was gracious enough to include some 110hp heads from his cache. The numbers don't match which is no big deal. The heads are identical in features but have different model numbers (3856759 and 3878566). I'm sure there was some reason why GM changed the numbers but I can't see it. Jim said there are at least 40 different head models (and probably more). He has in fact complied a pretty extensive list which he gave to me (among other info) of head numbers, etc that he said took he and com-patriots years to compile. Valuable stuff for future reference.
I removed the barrels from the core, which slipped off like butter, and sent them to exchange for some .060 bore remans. Jim also included all the misc stuff that I would need with the core. It is awesome to have him as a neighbor. If I need a corvair part or some advice ....well......knock on the neighbors door....very cool....

I don't know if I'll be using this RW case since I have another one (an RK case) I purchased that was prepared for and a/c (not by me). I'll definitely take the RW apart and asses its condition. Jim did a quick once over on the RK case and found a few problems. The accessory case slip pin shows very little reveal and we were both not sure how to extract it. Jim thought we could tap a bolt into the centre and squeeze it out or grab it with the bolt and wiggle it out. Maybe it doesn't matter. I dunnno. This corvair thing is very new to me.

I am sending the heads for rebuild tomorrow thanks to Brady at Magnificent Machine. The big a/c kit arrives early April. So it looks like I have a bit of time to work on the motor. Hopefully I'll have some parts to work on.....
