Brief Description:  Riveting the Elevators

Today I must have pounded a lot of rivets. I started the day by completing the pop riveting of the interior rib halves. Unfortunately, I realized I was going to be short on pop rivets before I was finished. Therefore I left out a few that go in the front spar web, which I knew I'd have access to later. I'll order some more from Vans, then I'll be able to complete the elevators. Until then, I've got plenty of other things to keep me busy. I finished riveting the skins to the elevator frames, and I have to tell you... there are a few last rivets where you have to reach inside one corner of the skin into a very tight space to buck them. It can be done solo, which I did, but it's very tough. The key is to take your time PRIOR to letting loose with the rivet gun. Ge the bucking bar exactly where you need it and make sure it's held firmly in your hand so it doesn't get away from you when you start pounding. With a little caution and a lot of patience, those rivets came out fine.
