Brief Description:  Riveting elevator skins to rear spars

Tonight I was able to squeeze in a few hours, thanks to Aneta, who looked after Amelia for most of the evening. She's only 4 weeks old and still acting like a terrorist with unreasonable demands. :)

I began the task of riveting the "hidden" places between the elevator skins and the rear spars. For this, you need a specialized bucking bar that's made only for the RV-10. It's about 12" long x 1" wide x 3/4" thick and has a small opposite taper at one end. You use this special bar to reach into (about 7" into) the narrow space between the elevator skins, which is just large enough for the bar itself to slide in. I found that using the clecos surrounding the rivet head to "index" the location of the bar, then checking to make sure it lifted the rivet out of the hole, helped to set the bar in the right spot. The trick is to keep the bar from moving while riveting; remember it's only 1" wide at the end. At first, it seems daunting to buck rivets you really can't see, but after some cautious tap/checks, I got the hang of it. They turned out great and I only had to drill out and replace one rivet I wasn't happy with.

After that, I moved on to pop riveting the rib halves together. It's a very small space to get a rivet puller into, but it can be done. I was able to pull all the rivets in the rib halves on one of the elevators, when the jaws in the puller gave out. I guess they need replacing more often if the puller is an el cheapo. Oh well. I'll pick up another pair this week and do the other elevator.
