Brief Description:  Pro-Sealing the Rudder Trailing Edge

The Pro-Seal arrived in no time and the shipping was next to nothing since I only ordered a 1 ounce tub of the stuff. Pro-Seal has got to be the stickiest stuff on Earth! Luckily for me I read that using petroleum jelly keeps the Pro-Seal from sticking to surfaces. That being said, you have to be very careful not to get any on surface you do want the stuff to stick. After cleaning everything with acetone, I set about glueing and rvieting the rudder together.

First, I triple-gloved my hands, put on a respirator, started the timer (30 minutes of work time!) and started mixing the Pro-Seal. Once it was properly mixed, I had to move pretty fast. I found that it was much easier to spread the stuff with my gloved finger than the popsicle sticks. Once I had it on both sides of the trailing edge, and they were laying together on each other, with a few clecos in place, I had to peel back the top skin and start pop-riveting the interior structure of the rudder. I HIGHLY recommend having a helper for this part. I was working alone and it was difficult to hold the skin and operate the hand pop-riveter, which is the only thing that will reach the interior-most rivets. For the outer ones, I used the pneumatic pop-rivet puller, which drastically sped things up. After riveting together a section, I'd switch to the other side of the table and cleco down more of the trailing edge, then jump back over and rivet some more, then cleco, etc. I finished everything in under 30 minutes, but it was tight. Came out great though. I can't wait for it to cure (2-3 days). Maybe I'll work on the horizontal stabilizer while I wait. ;)
