Brief Description: First Painted Part!
Wow! This isn't the first time (or last) that I had to break through an intimidation factor. I stalled around for over two weeks in the name of "research" and "heavy thinking" dreading the paint process. Just like when I first opened the crate, read the manual for the first time, messed up a rivet, or put a part on wrong. Each time I wonder if I can finish this project... then I press on and learn something entirely new. This has to be one of the absolute best parts of building a kit, gathering the courage to attempt a new frontier and the satisfaction of learning. I've always thought painting a car was for experts, certainly painting an airplane.
Not now! While my first ever paint attempt is not perfect (I have three tiny little runs around three rivets), I realize I can do this and it will look pretty good. When we approach such a project we can get trapped by the expectation that everything has to be absolutely perfect. No, not perfect, just sound. I decided on the Stewart Systems Aircraft paint. This project represents the sample/repair kit I bought. It came with just enough material for the fin, and is complete with instructions, training DVD, everything needed to accomplish this task. Now I can't wait to paint some more :-) The "paint booth" worked well, except after the primer coat I added a second cheap box fan to the exhaust which greatly improved the hanging fog problem I had with the primer.
