Brief Description:  First Engine Start

Today was the day! Time to see of the expensive piece of hardware sitting on the front of the fuselage would make noise. About 2.5 gallons of fuel was added to the fuel tank. The fuel cut off valve was opened and fuel was flowing into the Gascolator....and out a fitting that wasn't tight enough! After re-tightening the fiting, the fuel was again turned on and everything check out to the AeroCarb. The plane was tied to a tree, chocks were placed under the main gear, and the hand brake was clamped in the full "on" position. After reviewing starting procedures with Ed, my helper, it was time to start the engine. After working my way through the startup checklist, I came to the point to engage the starter......The engine started at high RPM and then died, but not before blowing my hat off my head! Boy, maybe I should have done the windscreen first! After many small adjustments to the Aerocarb and working through a mix-up with the mixture control, I was finally able to the the engine to run for an extended period of time....Just enough to satisfy the requirement of having run the engine. The Oil Pressure, Oil Temperature, CHT, and EGT all looked great. On one high RPM run (2000 RPM) the EGT's quickly started going up but never approached the max limits. What a great noise the engine made. The Grand Rapids EIS worked just great.
