After a bit of worry, the filter finally came off the carb. I had waxed the carb rather than use plastic and when I went to pull the filter off it was stuck. I didn't want to rip the carb apart... so I carefully worked the filter off.
It looks like it will work great. The RTV sealed around the parts about as good as can be expected. I trimmed a bit of the excess RTV off the filter.
