This is another one of those projects I have been fretting about for a while. The manual trim cable make a sharp bend after leaving the knob. The directions are vague as to how to drill the hole for it through the fuel valve cover. I have spent time each day for the past five thinking about the best way of handling it.
I have Googled it each evening and have viewed various ways other builders have installed it. (A few even decided to install it backwards.) I finally decided on a way I haven't seen others use. It's super simple.
My goal was to have the cable bend as little as possible. Looking at where it passes through the center assembly... I worked backwards. I ended up modifying the F-982 where the fuel valve cover connects. By switching the nutplate to an offset one, I was able to drill the hole for the cable closer to the floor and more in line with where the cable goes through the center bulkhead.
- Drilled out standard nutplate in F-982 - Drill, dimpled, and deburred for offset nutplate - Rivetes nutplate. - Measured and marked fuel valve cover - least amount of bend - Drilled fuel valve cover (step drillbit to correct size) - Ground down floor cover to size of hole - Installed plastic grommet - Tested fit and knob movement - NICE!
