Brief Description: Horizontal Stab - elevator fit - drill
I finally bit the bullet and drilled the holes in the elevator horns.
Before I drilled, I measured the distance of the rod bearings. They are to be between 13/16 and 7/8ths. (Not much of a tolerance) But, I checked and rechecked and they fell right between.
So, installed the elevator. Checked the gap at by the counterbalance one last time... then drilled. I had gone to the hardware store earlier today and found a bushing that fit the bearing exactly. I found a bit that fit snuggly into the bushing. (Checked all measurements again.) Then drilled. Its a bit scary knowing that if you goof up... replacing the horns will be a giant chore!
After drilling the elevator, I took them off and used a step drill bit to enlarge the hole to the correct size. Then... I tried the fit with a bolt through the bearing and into the horn. The elevator worked smoothly. (What a relief)
Next, I did the exact same thing with the other elevator. I resisted the urge to work quickly. I measured and remeasured. I seem to get into trouble when I hurry:-)
Again, everything worked out great.
With both installed, I checked the travel. With them installed, the throw should be 25-30 degrees up and 20-25 degrees down.
Both were well within limits
