Attached the forward part of the horizontal stabilizer today.
Started out by checking the up and down travel of the elevators - Up - 45 degrees (should be 25-30 degrees) - Down - 25 degrees (should be 20-25 degrees) Then removed the elevators
- Drew where the longeron and ribs were under the deck. - Checked and rechecked the measurements for the holes in the attach angles - Clamped the horizontal stabilizer in place - Measured distance from tip of stabilizer to firewall and a few other places - Adjusted the horizonal stabilizer until it was within 1/16 inch - Drilled holes through attach angles (Cormac watched one axis of the drill and I kept the other one perpendicular) - Checked bolts - Left bolt nut rubs up against a rivet in the longeron. (Will check with Vans)
Fabricated the shims - Drilled part way through the shims - Drilled rest of the way with the drill press
Disassembled and deburred holes and edges - Reinstalled horizontal stabilizer - Checked the distance to the deck after putting a 11/64 inch drill under the rear spar. - Test fit the vertical stabilizer - Marked parts to trim
