Brief Description:  Rudder Plate Nut Concern

Today started out with a puzzling problem. It started when I tried putting the bearing bolt into the rudder. (The rudder is basically closed up except for the trailing edge.) The bolts would only go part way into the nutplate AND in the bottom one the bolt wouldn't even start.

I used a dremel tool to trim the hole just a bit. The hole in the spar was a tiny bit smaller than the reinforcing plate.

Then, when I tried putting the bearing bolts into the nutplate, I started getting worried. I shared my concern with Cormac and Jim who were in the hangar. Puzzled, we decided to call Ken. He showed up in about 15 minutes, took one look, and smiled. The nutplates are designed that way so the nut won't work it's way lose. (I thought that was what the jamnut was for.)
