Brief Description:  Pre-oil the engine

Drained sump of remaining preservative oil--maybe a couple tbsp.

Made a "pig" out of 3" PVC pipe. Cap on bottom threaded 1/8-NPT for a ball valve. DWV screw cap on top threaded same size for compressed air fitting. EZ-Turn on PVC 3"-NPT threads held pressure 20-40 psi.

Took out plug on right side oil gallery at front--same gallery at rear goes to oil pressure line. Screwed AN4-1/8-NPT elbows into gallery and ball valve, connected them with a "spare" 1/4" hose ( for manifold pressure in Van's FF kit, not needed for Dynon MP sensor). Hose only connected at one end in image 1.

Filled pig with Phillips X/C 20W-50, ECI's recommended break-in through TBO oil. Ran 1/4 of a qt run down the sides of the pig and flushed out, then filled it up with 3.75 qts.

Unscrewed oil pressure sender from firewall manifold, pressurized pig to 20 psi, and let flow. Screwed sender back in as soon as oil came out the oil pressure line. Paper towels arranged to catch spillage didn't soak up oil worth a damn. Lost a couple of tbsp running back to the valve to shut it off. Should have been poised to screw sender back in instead.ad. Wiped up alright, and on the Dynon there was...oil pressure! (Image 2).

Depressurized several times to see how much oil was left in the pig. With about a qt left, dipstick still bone dry. Refilled pig with 3 qts--right at its 4 qt capacity. Still less that 4 qts on the stick when (tapping side of pig) oil level was just above the end cap. OK, enough pre-oiling. Somwhat messy disconnecting line and replacing elbow with gallery plug (with fresh Permatex sealant)--another couple tbsp lost. Flushed last bit of oil from pig into filler/dipstick housing. Filter and oil cooler should have been filled, at least while pressurized.

Couldn't give starter a spin with spark plugs out (should see "instant" pressure) because no 13/16" spark plug socket in the tool box! Have to remedy that....
