Brief Description: Starter Project 2 - skeleton, stiffeners and skins
Started the second starter project today and made some good progress. Made the four stiffeners and rivetted those to the top and bottom skins ok.Built the skeleton comprising two end ribs, the spar and two re-inforcing plates. Unfortunately, I still hadn't learned from yesterday and didn't hold the work securely for the first rivet of the reinforcing plates; the gun slipped and I smiled the work surface quite badly (see pic 1). Just as well this isn't the real thing, and now I *definitely* won't make that mistake again.Pic 3 shows the skeleton and bottom skin on the jig ready for rivetting. Took me ages to find some steel and make the tool to dimple the last couple of holes in the ribs, and I was decidely unimpressed with the results. Then I found the vise grip dimpling tool I had bought from Avery; doh! Oh well, perhaps I'll remember I have it next time I need it!Takes almost as long to just make simple jigs and fixtures as it does to actually do some of the work. No longer it takes ages to build your first plane!! Rivetting tomorrow. Unless the weather is good, in which case I'm going skydiving.
