Brief Description:  Tom Clark fastback

Since Jackie was out, I decided to go ahead and look at the Tom Clark bulkheads, in particular the two middle ones; F-809 and F-808. The issue with the bulkheads is that they were made for the old non-pre-punched kit, so they don't quite fit the new one. In particular, the stiffening flange interferes and the stiffening bead pressed into the bulkhead means it won't sit flat. Advice from TC is to slightly flatten the bead and then "liquid shim" if desired, and that is what I intend to do.

First off, though, I removed the F-809 bulkhead and used my dremel with a cutting disk to remove the lower portion of the flange that interferes with the existing F-809 lower bulkhead half. I also marked and drilled (2mm) the holes in the flanges that will eventually be back-drilled into the skin. Finally, I drilled holes around teh inside flange to which the static port tube will be cable tied. I then re-fitted the bulkhead to the fuselage, positioned carefully and drilled through the pre-punched holes in Vans lower bulkhead with #30. Thats the F-809 fitted.

Having done that, I went ahead and did pretty much exactly the same with the F-808 bulkhead. I stopped for a couple of minutes to drill a 2mm hole in my left index finger and then clean it and put a stiking plaster on, but otherwise is was pretty much plain sailing. Its nice to have those two bulkheads in their final resting position. I noted when cleaning pen marks from the bulkheads that the primer TC has used comes off very easily just with meths. The decision has been made to strip and re-prime before final rivetting.

Next time out I shall remove the vertical stabilizer and then make a start on the F-810 and F807 bulkheads.
