Brief Description:  Left flap, hinge

Tonight I drilled the hinge to the left flap. Prompted by a current thread on the VansAirforce Forums I was a little concerned about doing this, so before I started I did some research. Dan Checkoway on his site (and in a follow up article in the SoCal newsletter) used a method of holding the hinge in place with temporary rivets which were later drilled out and the holes filled with 'normal' flush rivets. However, I just didn't fancy drilling any more holes than were already there. I gave it some thought and this is what I came up with. First, I cut the hinge to the required length and then marked a line on the hinge that was about 7/32" from the edge, thus giving me at least the required 3/16" edge distance for a 3/32" rivet. Then I clamped the hinge to the flap spar so that the line was visible through the pre-punched holes. Next, I checked that the center of the hinge pin was 3/8" from the center of the holes, as per the drawing, and it was. The hinge was clamped with a 1" cleco at each end and cleco C-clamps in each bay (I only had four C-clamps). I worked from one end to the other and then came back releasing and re-clamping the C-clamps to allow the hinge to settle into a straight position. If you keep the other half of the hinge pinned on, then you can flip the hinge at 90 degrees and sight along it for straightness. It was all good so out came the drill. Again, starting at the outboard end I drilled and cleco'd one hole at a time, constantly checking that the hinge moved freely, that the line was still visible through all the holes along its length, and that it was straight. This whole process took about one hour, but the end result is the hinge drilled and cleco'd, straight and free moving, with no extra holes to fill... sweet :-)
