With the elevator counterweights installed, it was time to closeout the elevators. All bonding surfaces were prepped, cleaned and flox was applied. The elevators were attached to the horizontal tail for closing using bolts through the hinges. Square steel tubes were laid along the spar and the trailing edges were clamped using angle iron. The skin around the counterweights was taped closed to ensure a proper bond. Shot bags were added on top of the square tubes and the elevators were left to cure overnight.
Trailing edges clamped in place.
Tape used to hold the skin to the counterweights.
Square steel bars and shot bags placed along the elevator spars.
