Brief Description:  Main Spars

Today, my friend Charlie Eubanks came over to train Ruth and me in the fine art of Riveting. We were good learners, but need to practice some more. I'm still plagued with the occasional smile, too quick to remove/move the gun from the work.

We also had a problem with the rivet gun. My gun (Taylor 3X) was not hitting as hard as Charlie's (WWII vintage Cleco). I called Cleaveland Tool this afternoon and discussed the problem at length with one of their Tech guys. He said if the rivet set is actually moving in and out, then the way the guns are designed, the only other cause would be air blockage. He recommended I use an oil based solvent (kerosene) and flush the gun from both ends, blow it out with my air gun, oil it, and then cycle it. I did that twice, with little noticeable difference. Then, I noticed the rivet set moved freely in Charlie's gun, but appeared to be a bit more tight in mine. I didn’t know if that was an issue of age/wear or not. But, with it sticking a little bit, I wondered if the spring on my gun was really strong enough to re-cock it after every hit. I cleaned the gun barrel with a degreaser, then put the spring from Charlie's gun on mine. It then worked identical to Charlie's. I’ll look for a better spring for my gun and then should have the problem solved. In the meantime, I’ll just use Charlie's spring on my gun.
