Brief Description:  Rivetting the wing skeleton

The generally accepted method of rivetting the slelton is to buck the forward edge of the ribs to the main spar with the rear spar off then squeeze the rear spar.

Bucking the ribs to the main spar - Sorry no photo but we clamped the main spar to the workbench then worked from the outboard rib inwards. By leaving the rear spar off you can gently bend the rib to get a nice 90 degrees with the rivet gun, without resorting to using the less efficient offset rivet set. Out of both wings we only had to drill out one rivet! No we're not that good! We have left a few smilers, mainly the the top or bottom rivets, as it is almost impossible to get the bucking bar sweet spot on the rivet as the spar doubler is in the way.{Post Note - check this top tip out to help reduce the chance of smileys}

I have heeded the advice in the manual (Section 5D) that you are more likely to weaken the joint by drilling out the rivet than leaving it in. With a 3X gun we found that 60 psi worked well.

Squeezing the ribs to the rear spar - When I bought my tools I thought really hard about spending so much money on a pneumatic squeezer but some other builders swore by it. My take after squeezing the rear spars? Apart from one rivet (smile) every rivet is as perfect as you could expect - this amount of 1/8" rivets with a hand squeezer must be a nightmare. I for one am glad I spent every penny on that squeezer - it is the one tool I would least like to part with.

To celebrate our achievement we over indulged with triple duff (cakes) - what a reward!
