Brief Description:  Cowl 2 - Marking the two halves

SPACER. I made a spacer to simulate the firewall height. Could have made it out of one piece though!

FITTING THE TWO HALVES. Dan Horton (a USA builder) made a good observation on the VAF Forum - whenever you tackle a job always have in mind what you are trying to achieve.

So to that end what are we trying to acheive with the cowl? We want the cowls to be centred on the spinner and set at the correct gap, level and fitted flush to the forward top/side/bottom skins that are attached to the firewall flange. The plans tell you to do this but not much in the way of help. Enter Dan.

CENTRED ON THE SPINNER. Dan suggested to make a 13" template to simulate the spinner/backplate flange. I drew a centre line and then fitted the template to the bottom cowl - note the top protruding (circled) - with a ruler going through the line. This line coincided with the joggle (helpful) and the vertical distance between the ruler and the bottom of the inlets was equal (LEVEL). I marked the bottom cowl below the ruler.

I then moved the template to the top cowl and centred it and marked abeam the centreline.
