Brief Description:  Fitting the Canopy

The first thing you notice about reading SECTION 9 of the manual is that you are no longer spoon fed by Vans. For us pre-punched builders it is now time to take extra care and really read the drawings and be very methodical and slow.

Some of the other RV-8 builders who I have been monitoring have dried up on their websites so after some careful resarch I discovered Mike Elliot .

Mike bought the QB but is far enough ahead to help me see some pit falls. Beacuse I want to anodise the three rails black I, like Mike decided to change the build order slightly. Also to slightly complicate things my rear skin is not rivetted yet (rear wiring to do).

The first pain in the A*** is the forward hole of the centre rail/spacer. The plans say drill from underneath but as there is no prepunched hole in the receptacle I drilled the forward hole to #30. I then took a stubby drill from my angle drill set and rotated it several times to make a mark on the receptacle. I removed the spacer and using the empty hole in the skin/F-807 bulkhead I used my 1" #40 drill bit and drilled at the mark. I then enlarged to #30, replaced the spacer and final drilled #27 from underneath.

Next problem is how to fit the forward screw due to poor access when the C-806 Anchor Block is in place? I think I wil fit an AN515-6R12 from underneath and a nyloc nut on the top with a slight recess made in the C-806 Anchor Block. Photos to follow.
